How to Fix Candle Tunneling (and Stop It for Good)
You lit your new candle, let it burn for an hour, blew it out — and came back to find a neat little crater down the middle. Around the edges sits a ring of perfectly good wax the flame never touched. That's candle tunneling, and yes, you can fix it tonight.
The short answer: tunneling happens when a candle doesn't burn long enough on its first light for the wax to melt all the way to the edges. To fix it, you either give the melt pool a second chance (the foil method) or reset the surface entirely (the oven method).
What Is Candle Tunneling?
Tunneling is when a candle burns straight down the center, leaving a hard ring of unmelted wax along the glass. Each time you relight, the hole gets deeper, the flame gets smaller, and eventually the wick drowns below the wax line.
A candle's first burn decides whether it tunnels for the rest of its life. Wax has memory: it only melts where it melted last time. If that first melt pool doesn't reach the edge of the jar, the edges stay solid — and stay that way.
Why Your Candle Is Tunneling
There are four common causes, and only one of them is the candle's fault:
- The first burn was too short. This is the big one. If you light a candle and snuff it after 20 minutes, you've started the tunnel yourself.
- Wicking. A wick that's too small for the jar's diameter simply can't produce a melt pool wide enough. This is a maker's problem, not yours — and it's why wick sizing is something worth checking before you buy (more on that below).
- Drafts. A candle burning beside an open window or a fan melts unevenly — the wax pulls toward one side, and the other side never catches up.
- Extinguishing too early, every time. Short burns compound the problem. Each session only melts what the last session melted.
How to Fix Candle Tunneling: 3 Methods
Method 1: The Foil Method (best for mild tunneling)
Leave the candle burning and cap the jar with a piece of aluminum foil, folding a hole in the center so the flame can breathe. The foil traps heat and reflects it outward, melting the stuck wax ring back into the pool.
- Light the candle and trim the wick to about 5mm.
- Cover the top with foil, tenting it slightly, with a hole over the flame.
- Burn for 1–2 hours. The outer wax will level out.
- Remove the foil carefully (it's hot) and blow out normally.
One good foil session can erase weeks of tunneling — as long as you let the pool reach the glass before extinguishing.
Method 2: The Hair Dryer Method (best for shallow tunnels)
If the tunnel is only a few millimeters deep, soften the whole top surface with a hair dryer on high heat, tilting the jar so the melting wax flows level. Relight while the surface is still warm and let it burn to the edge.
Method 3: The Oven Method (for severe tunneling)
For a deep, stubborn crater: preheat your oven to its lowest setting (around 80°C / 175°F), place the candle on a baking sheet, and warm it for 10–15 minutes until the top surface goes completely liquid and flat. Remove, center the wick, and let it reset. Relight and give it a long, proper burn.
Never use the oven method on a candle with decorations, and never microwave a jarred candle.
How to Prevent Tunneling From Happening Again
Prevention is one habit and two micro-checks:
- The first-burn rule: burn the candle until the melt pool reaches the edge of the jar — usually 1.5 to 2 hours for a 7–8cm jar. No exceptions, even if that first evening ends early.
- Trim the wick to ~5mm before every burn. A long wick burns hot and fast, which sounds good but actually melts down the middle instead of out.

Can you fix a tunneled candle without foil?
Yes. The hair dryer method works for shallow tunnels, and the oven method resets even deep ones. Foil is simply the most convenient because it fixes the candle while you're using it.
Why does my candle tunnel even after a long first burn?
If full-length burns still tunnel, the wick is undersized for the jar — a manufacturing issue you can't burn your way out of. The oven method will even out the surface, but it will likely tunnel again. Choose candles from makers who size wicks to their vessels.
Is tunneled wax wasted?
Not if you fix it — the ring remelts back into the pool. But if tunneling goes on for weeks, the flame eventually sinks below the wax line and the candle can't be relit at all. At that point, the remaining wax is only good for a wax-melt warmer.
